The Fairfield City Council held a brief meeting Tuesday as it was the last of their current calendar year.

Dr. Shawn and Heather Bladel purchased the former Hometown Realty building. According to Alderman Atteberry, the couple with their business, Recreated Health LLC have put a good amount of work into the property. The couple has requested business district funding from the new building projects and facade fund. A total of $20,000 of funds was approved with $10,000 from each. The resolution passed unanimously.

A request to close Leroy Street June 22nd and 23rd for a Pickleball Tournament was approved.

The Council discussed placing right turn only signage at Southwest 3rd and Delaware Streets.  City officials see the intersection in a light where residents could make what may be an illegal left turn to go straight. According to Mayor Moore, that road that is straight on from SW 3rd is privately owned. Mayor Moore asked City Attorney; Darrin Rice to work on preparing the ordinance for upcoming vote.

A resolution was passed for the Fairfield Police and Fire Commission to conduct training,  update the police and fire eligibility lists, and to create a non-certified list as well as a lateral transfer list. According to city officials, both the fire and police department lists are vacant of any applicants. According to Police Chief Keith Colclasure, Fitness Testing will take place June 7th and 8th. According to Mayor Moore, the city would prefer to have the opportunity to bring in a lateral transfer over a non-certified hire as the transfer can start work day 1 while the non-certified hire has to attend training.

The council approved an increase in the faculty charge for water meter and sewer meter facilities. Mayor Moore in the meeting stated that the item was not something the council wanted to bring forward, but Moore made mention of the $625,000 shortfall. After a meeting with the budget committee, the raising of the fees were something that the committee of Sherry Eckleberry, Allen Marsh, and Clifford Reever. Currently, there is a $1 faculty charge set to be added on May 1, but the council approved adding an additional $3 per month to that charge for a total of $4 per month for each utility, making it an overall increase of $8 per month. Prior to the vote, Mayor Moore did ask for other suggestions. The increase would take place starting May 1.

One final additional item added to the agenda was the expenditure of the Fairfield City Band. The council approved $7,000 for the band, which will perform in the month of June.I’m
