LOS ANGELES – A wild motorcycle stunt on US-101 resulted in felony charges for a Sun Valley resident after officers from the California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz Area, assisting in Los Angeles, saw the rider pop a wheelie and attempt to flee.
According to a June update from the California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz office, the 34-year-old rider was caught performing the dangerous stunt on a Honda Grom in front of officers stationed near US 101.
“Popping a wheelie on your motorcycle is not just dangerous; it can get you in serious trouble, especially when CHP officers are nearby,” the agency said in a social media post.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team, which is normally based in Santa Cruz, were assisting with public safety efforts in Los Angeles during the ongoing demonstrations.
The team was in the area as part of a statewide collaboration to ensure highway and major roadway safety, according to the CHP Santa Cruz office.
When officers attempted to pull the rider over, he refused, resulting in a chase.
“He not only ignored safety guidelines but also failed to yield when our officers attempted to stop him,” the Colorado Highway Patrol claimed.
Captain Brown, commander of the San Luis Obispo CHP office, assisted in apprehending the suspect safely.
The Sun Valley man is now facing serious legal consequences, including felony evasion and reckless driving charges, according to the CHP Santa Cruz Area.
The incident adds to the growing concern about dangerous stunts and high-speed driving on California highways.
“The California Highway Patrol does not tolerate reckless drivers and is committed to maintaining safe roadways for everyone across our Golden State,” the policemen said.
Authorities urged all motorists to prioritize safety not only for themselves, but also for others on the road. “Remember, your safety and the safety of others should always come first,” the CHP Santa Cruz Area said.
