Wilmington, DE – Intense heat and humidity will dominate the region through Thursday, creating dangerous conditions with heat index values that could reach 99°F.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect for communities from Wilmington to Philadelphia until 8 p.m. Thursday, warning residents of the risks posed by the oppressive warmth.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, NJ, the combination of high temperatures and significant humidity will increase the chances of heat-related illnesses.
The advisory covers New Castle County in Delaware, Camden, Gloucester, and northwestern Burlington counties in New Jersey, and Delaware and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the heat.
The most intense conditions are expected on Thursday, Juneteenth, with a 93°F high and the possibility of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, especially after 2 p.m.
These storms could affect the area before 8 p.m. and again after 11 p.m. On Friday, the weather will provide a brief respite with sunny skies and a high of 88°F, offering some relief from the intense heat.
The weekend forecast brings a return to hot conditions. Saturday will be sunny with temperatures reaching near 90°F, and Saturday night will bring partly cloudy skies and a low around 72°F.
Sunday will remain mostly sunny, with the high reaching near 97°F. As we move into early next week, the heat will continue to build, with Monday expected to see a high near 98°F.
Residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours to avoid heat-related issues. It’s also important to check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning to ensure their safety during this extreme heat.
