Minnesota Summer Weather Alert Thunderstorms and 97°F Heat Expected in Minneapolis

As the Fourth of July weekend kicks off, Minneapolis is bracing for extreme weather conditions. Central Minnesota will see soaring temperatures, a high heat index, and the potential for thunderstorms. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued warnings for strong storms, rising rivers, and the intense heat hitting the city by Friday.

Thunderstorms and Rising Heat

By Thursday evening, strong storms may develop across southern and central Minnesota. However, Friday will bring intense heat with a high heat index reaching 97°F in Minneapolis. As the day progresses, thunderstorms are expected to return late in the evening, lasting into Saturday.

Flood Warning Remains in Effect

A Flood Warning is currently in place for the Crow River at Rockford, impacting Wright and Hennepin counties. The river crested at 10.4 feet and will likely remain at flood stage until Saturday morning. This poses a threat to roads and low-lying areas, including Highway 212 and local riverbanks. Residents are advised to stay clear of flooded roadways and exercise caution around streams.

What to Expect on Saturday

Saturday is expected to bring a 70% chance of thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. Thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rain, and rainfall totals may reach up to three-quarters of an inch by the evening. Although Sunday will offer some relief, the weather will remain unpredictable through the upcoming week, with more chances of storms and continued humidity.
