Is there a perfect doughnut? The Norridge bakery claims to have the best chocolate doughnuts in Illinois. This leads me to my next location, where I will determine whether it is truly the best.
This well-known local bakery has been around for decades, tucked away in a small strip mall off Lawrence Avenue in Norridge.
This small bakery bakes fresh pastries and doughnuts every day. They are well-known for all of their pastries, but one in particular, the chocolate “crack” doughnut, has gained a cult following.
My first visit was during Halloween. The bakery had about six customers and two women working behind the counter.
This place is very old school. Everyone is very nice, but expect to wait if there are more than three customers. Everything moves somewhat slowly.
I waited about 25 minutes for my turn in queue. I simply asked for the chocolate doughnut, and they understood exactly what I meant. No clarification is required. I double-checked and enquired whether this was the “Crack” doughnut. The worker smiled and replied, “Yes, this is the famous chocolate doughnut.”
I first heard about this bakery on Chicago’s Best Show, which aired a few years ago but has since been cancelled. People said you could not eat just one of these doughnuts, so I have always wanted to try them.
I waited until I got home to fully enjoy the doughnut. I sat down to open the box and look at six gorgeous, perfectly frosted doughnuts.
My first bite was extraordinary. The frosting had almost a fudge consistency. The doughnut itself was slightly crunchy. I was in absolute heaven. My only thought was, “I wish I had bought more than six.”
After the doughnuts were gone, I found myself daydreaming about going back for more. A week later, I returned to get a dozen of these chocolate doughnuts.
This time, the service was much faster. These are the best chocolate doughnuts I have ever had.
I am in my forties, and this tasted like a chocolate doughnut I used to get as a kid. I can not remember who made them. I believe it was Heineman. We used to get them from Dominick’s Grocery, which is now closed. If you were on a diet, I doubt you could eat just one of these doughnuts. They are that good.
I truly love these doughnuts and can not wait to go back for more. Believe me when I say the hype is real. These are the most delicious chocolate doughnuts in Illinois. On my next visit, I plan to try their other pastries and coffee cakes.
