Elgin man died in a crash in Marshall County

MARSHALL COUNTY – An Elgin man is dead after a collision between his Tesla and a semi.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said Alan Tsao was identified as the driver and the sole occupant of the Tesla.

Kathy Anderson, Tri-County Development Director for the Salvation Army, confirmed to 25News that Tsao was the Chief Financial Officer for the Salvation Army’s North & Central Illinois Division.

Around 10:40 a.m., deputies were called for the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of state routes 17 and 40.

According to witnesses and dash cam video, the sheriff’s office said a semi hauling grain was turning eastbound onto State Route 17 from 40. The Tesla was driving westbound and failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the semi and trailer.

Tsao was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

The crash is being investigated by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.

The Illinois Department of Transportation was called to help with rerouting traffic. The road was reopened around 5:25 p.m.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was helped by the coroner’s office, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Stark County Ambulance Serivce, the fire departments of Wyoming and Bradford, ISP, and IDOT.
