Residents and drivers along I-90 in southern Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota should brace for heavy rain tonight into Friday morning.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse has issued warnings about the likelihood of significant rainfall, potentially exceeding an inch in certain areas. This rainfall could cause localized flooding and create hazardous driving conditions, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Areas Likely to Experience Heavy Rain
The heaviest rain is expected to hit areas south of I-90, including La Crosse, Prairie du Chien, and Decorah, where there is a 64% chance of rainfall exceeding one inch.
As the storm moves northward into Thursday night and Friday morning, the Twin Cities will see an 84% chance of significant rainfall, while Eau Claire is expected to have a 71% chance. The rain will move steadily through the region, impacting travel and outdoor activities.
Flooding Risks and Road Hazards
Although widespread flooding is not expected, repeated rounds of rain could cause ponding on roads and lead to minor urban flooding.
Areas along U.S. Highway 52 and I-94, near cities like Rochester, Winona, and Black River Falls, should monitor conditions closely as the rain continues. Drivers are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roads, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to lose control.
What Residents Should Do
To stay safe, residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for the possibility of heavy rain. Charging mobile devices ahead of time and clearing storm drains can help reduce flooding and prevent issues with power outages.
Since additional showers are possible over the weekend, it’s essential to stay informed for any updated weather advisories that may be issued.
