Scattered Thunderstorms Expected in Northern Illinois This Weekend

Parts of northern Illinois are preparing for scattered thunderstorms late this week, with a higher chance of heavy rain and strong storms from Friday into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, warmer inland temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday, while lakeshore areas will stay cooler. Drivers and residents should be ready for potential disruptions to outdoor activities.

Thunderstorms Likely to Impact Northern Illinois

Temperatures will climb into the 80s across inland areas on Thursday and Friday, but lakeshore areas will stay cooler, with temperatures hovering in the 60s and low 70s.

While the chance for storms will remain low on Thursday, isolated afternoon and evening storms are possible, particularly north of I-80 and near the Wisconsin state line.

Friday and Saturday Storm Risks

By Friday, the risk of more widespread showers and thunderstorms increases, especially in areas from Rockford to Kankakee.

Strong gusty winds, brief downpours, and lightning are likely. On Saturday, the storm risk continues, with some stronger storms expected during the afternoon and evening hours, especially in eastern Illinois.

Travel and Outdoor Preparations

Drivers should prepare for slick and wet roads, particularly during the evening commutes on Friday and Saturday. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and make preparations for possible interruptions to weekend events due to the storms.
