DES PLAINES – A Des Plaines woman accused of a fatal DUI crash in the north suburbs is now facing felony charges.

According to Des Plaines police, Giovanna Rodriguez-Fuentes, 28, has been charged with one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities say the charge stems from a crash that occurred just before midnight on Sunday, June 1, near Algonquin Road and Leslie Lane in Des Plaines.

Officers say Rodriguez-Fuentes and her passenger, 49-year-old Nazly Rodriguez-Munoz of Des Plaines, were driving eastbound on Algonquin Road in a Toyota Prius when they collided with the back of a Volvo semi-truck that night.

Rodriguez-Fuentes sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, but her passenger, Rodriguez-Munoz, died later in the hospital from her injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, Rodriguez-Fuentes told police that the Volvo was parked on the south side of Algonquin Road with no lights, while the truck driver told officers that he was driving east on Algonquin Road at a slow speed.

According to officers, further investigation into the incident revealed that Rodriguez-Fuentes was allegedly driving while intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Rodriguez-Fuentes was charged on Tuesday, June 3, and surrendered to Cook County deputies two days later.

Rodriguez-Fuentes is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, but authorities have not provided a booking photo for her.
