An 18-year-old is facing multiple charges for allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through the Chicago suburbs.
Emmanuel Rivera fled a traffic stop in Wood Dale, crashed his car, and then turned himself in; police discovered a loaded Glock in the vehicle.
He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 21.
WOOD DALE, Ill – A teenager is facing charges for allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through a Chicago suburb on Tuesday night.
Around 9 p.m., Emmanuel Rivera, 18, allegedly fled a traffic stop near Maple Avenue and Elmhurst Street in Wood Dale, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Rivera drove more than 60 mph in a 20-mph zone while officers pursued him, according to officials. Rivera turned southbound on Route 83 and collided with a median, causing his vehicle to become disabled. Rivera and several others abandoned the car and fled the scene.
Officers later identified Rivera as the driver of the vehicle. Later that night, he turned himself in to the police. When police searched the vehicle, they discovered a loaded Glock 27.
Rivera was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and a number of misdemeanour and traffic violations.
According to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Mr. Rivera attempted to flee the police instead of pulling over, as many others have done before. “As a result of the outstanding work of the Wood Dale Police Department in identifying Mr. Rivera as the alleged driver of the vehicle, he will remain in custody awaiting trial.”
Rivera, of Addison, was denied pretrial release on Thursday.
His next court appearance is set for July 21.
