North suburban police shot and killed a man who charged at them with a knife early Friday morning, according to officials.
The man has since been identified.
According to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, three Highland Park police officers responded to a well-being check call shortly before 5 a.m.
A concerned driver informed police that a vehicle nearly hit someone who was lying in the road. According to the caller, the man in the street then stood up and stumbled into a home on the 900 block of Half Day Road.
When officers arrived at the scene, they knocked on the front door.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force reported that a 59-year-old man who lived in the house went outside abruptly with a knife.

Police retreated and ordered the man to drop the knife, but he charged at them, threatening them.
The officers then fired shots, hitting the man. Officers and the Highland Park Fire Department attempted to save the man’s life, but he died of his injuries.
The man was identified as Brent Bucholtz, 59, by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. They said he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Half Day Road between Western and Compton was closed due to police activity.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is investigating.
Authorities did not immediately provide additional details about the shooting.
