Torrington, Conn. – Residents of Litchfield County are being urged to take precautions on Wednesday, as high levels of ground-level ozone trigger an Air Quality Action Day for Torrington, Oakville, New Milford, and surrounding areas.
Health Risks from Elevated Ozone Levels
According to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to approach or exceed unhealthy standards from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.
This poses significant health risks, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma. Officials are advising these groups to limit outdoor activities and avoid prolonged physical exertion during peak ozone hours.
Impacted Areas and Safety Measures
The elevated ozone levels are expected to affect key areas, including Gaylordsville, Terryville, and Thomaston. Commuters and outdoor workers in these communities are strongly encouraged to reduce the time spent outdoors and consider using carpooling or public transit to minimize air pollution.
To stay safe, residents are advised to run air conditioners with clean filters and keep windows closed throughout the evening. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, as it can contribute to the already high levels of air pollution.
Ongoing Monitoring and Alerts
This Air Quality Alert will remain in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, and further advisories could be issued if ozone levels remain elevated.
