Boston, Massachusetts – After a scorching Tuesday that saw heat index values soar past 107°F, relief will arrive Wednesday, but with some complications.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to move into the region by early afternoon, which will cool temperatures by nearly 10 degrees. However, these storms may cause disruptions to travel and bring brief downpours, along with gusty winds.
Extreme Heat Warning Continues
According to the National Weather Service in Norton, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m.
Tuesday for Boston, Worcester, and most of central and eastern Massachusetts. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to top out near 102°F, but due to the humidity, it will feel closer to 110°F.
The combination of heat and humidity can pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids, and check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning.
Thunderstorms Expected Wednesday Afternoon
Relief from the intense heat is expected by Wednesday afternoon as isolated thunderstorms begin to develop around 1 p.m., particularly in the areas near the I-95 and Route 128 corridors.
With highs falling to the low 90s, Boston, Lowell, and Brockton can expect a 30% chance of rain. While severe weather isn’t expected, brief downpours and gusty winds could lead to delays and minor flooding in urban areas.
Cooler Weather Ahead
Thursday will bring a more organized rain pattern, with temperatures dropping to around 70°F — a sharp contrast from Tuesday’s extreme heat. Winds will be breezy, and there’s a higher chance of showers in the region.
As the week progresses, the weather will remain unsettled with intermittent showers through Saturday, but by Sunday, sunny conditions are expected to return, with temperatures rising to a more comfortable 84°F.
