A wrong-way driver caused a crash on the Tri-State Tollway Wednesday morning, killing one person, according to Illinois State Police.

The crash happened around 1:54 a.m. on Interstate 294’s northbound lanes at milepost 46.75 in Glenview.

According to police, a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes collided with a box truck.

The wrong-way driver was killed in the crash, according to police. The driver and passenger in the second vehicle were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The crash forced the closure of all northbound lanes of I-294 between Dempster Street and Willow Road. All lanes reopened at around 6:45 a.m.

The crash occurred as heavy rain overnight caused sloppy traffic conditions on Chicago area roads.

Tracy Butler, an ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist, said the torrential overnight rain was easing early Wednesday, giving way to some light rain.

The southbound I-294 exit ramp to West Ogden Avenue was closed due to high standing water levels.

A jackknifed semi was blocking two eastbound lanes of Interstate 88 near Route 31.
