Seniors in Delaware follow a standard renewal process for their driver’s licenses, similar to other adult drivers. The state issues licenses valid for eight years to all eligible drivers, regardless of age.
You are eligible to renew your license up to six months before its expiration, and the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will send a renewal reminder about two months prior to your expiration date.
In-Person Renewal Requirements
To renew your license, visit any DMV office without needing an appointment. Bring your current driver’s license, fill out a renewal application, and complete a vision screening. If you have changed your address, you will need to provide proof of residency.
The standard renewal fee is $40, and a $10 late fee applies if you renew after your license expires. Delaware does not provide a grace period for driving with an expired license, and doing so may result in fines or legal consequences.
Online Renewal Options
Online renewal is available for most drivers, provided you are a U.S. citizen, your information is current with the DMV, you did not renew online last time, and your license is not suspended or revoked.
To renew online, create or log in to a myDMV account, verify your information, pay the fee, and print a temporary license until your new one arrives by mail. If you need to update your information or upgrade to a REAL ID, or if you renewed online last time, you must renew in person.
Vision and Knowledge Testing
At every renewal, you must pass a vision screening. The required standard is 20/50 with or without correction. Bring your eyeglasses if you use them.
If you do not meet the vision requirement, you will be referred to a licensed vision specialist and can return with a report for another test. A written knowledge test is not typically required for seniors unless specifically requested by the examiner.
Additional Considerations for Seniors
Delaware does not impose special restrictions or more frequent renewals for seniors. However, if concerns about your driving ability arise, the DMV may require a reexamination of your physical or mental fitness. The DMV encourages seniors to maintain their independence as long as they can drive safely and offers resources to help older drivers stay safe on the road.
