Officials say hundreds are without power after a van in McHenry slams into a pole, injuring at least nine people

Multiple people were injured, and thousands were left without power Saturday following a serious crash in the north suburbs, officials said.

ABC7 witnessed the aftermath of a van crash on Route 31 and Prime Parkway in McHenry, Illinois.

Around 7:20 p.m., a van and trailer carrying 14 people collided with a utility pole on Illinois Route 31 in McHenry, according to police. The driver apparently fell asleep behind the wheel.

According to police, eight people in the van were transported to a local hospital via ambulance. One person was airlifted to the hospital. Their exact conditions were unknown.

Five other occupants refused medical treatment.

According to McHenry police, the vehicle had traveled from Aurora, Illinois, and was transporting “La Picosa,” a traveling Mexican band, to a concert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After the pole was damaged, ComEd reported a power outage that affected over 2,000 customers in the area. Crews arrived on the scene to repair the outage.

No additional information about the crash was immediately available.
