A pedestrian was killed in the northern suburbs on Thursday morning.

Police confirmed that the suspected SUV involved in the crash was abandoned only two blocks from where the victim was struck and killed.

A man in his 70s was walking in the 6700 block of Beckwith Road near Neenah on Thursday around 7:30 a.m., according to Morton Grove police.

He was struck by a tan Chevy Equinox LT driving down Beckwith, according to police, and officers discovered him on the ground with critical injuries. The pedestrian was taken to Lutheran General Hospital and died less than an hour later.

Officials with Cook County later identified the victim as Jonathan Friedman of Morton Grove.

Friedman was an avid walker and photographer, according to ABC7’s interviews with family and friends.

Neighbors claimed they saw him out walking every morning.

Investigators spent the majority of the day processing evidence from the vehicle before towing it away in the afternoon.

The suspected driver fled the scene. Morton Grove police later said they discovered the Chevy Equinox, the suspected SUV involved in the crash, at Beckwith and Normandy, but no one was inside.

Police say they have a person of interest in custody and are asking witnesses to call them.

No additional information was made available.
