A Michigan man who attempted a mass shooting at a church on Sunday was run over and later shot by church security.

The Detroit News reported that Brian Anthony Browning, 31, arrived around 11 a.m. with an AR-15-style rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, and a dozen fully loaded magazines.

Browning, who had drawn attention by driving erratically in the parking lot, exited his vehicle with the rifle and began firing at the church. A witness, whom police have not identified, drove into Browning in a Ford F-150 truck. Browning was then fatally shot by church security, according to the newspaper.

“The church security team was alerted by the gunfire and reacted quickly to engage the suspect outside the main entrance doors of the church,” police said in a statement to the newspaper.

“The security team locked the front doors and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was shot and killed by a member of the security team.”

According to NBC News, Browning’s mother is a church member. He would occasionally attended services there. According to the network, police believe Browning was in a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.

Police told NBC that there was no evidence linking the attempted mass shooting to the ongoing Middle East conflict. Police also stated that they had no prior contacts with Browning.

NBC News reported that one member of the security team was shot twice in the leg during the incident. Although a few bullets were fired into the church from the outside, no one was injured.
