Wyoming Weather Alert Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Sheridan and Campbell Counties

Sheridan, Wyo. – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for northeastern Wyoming, including Sheridan and Campbell counties, until 9 p.m. Saturday. The storms are expected to bring damaging winds, large hail, and other severe weather conditions.

Severe Weather Expected for Sheridan, Campbell, and Surrounding Areas

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 487 covers five counties—Campbell, Crook, Johnson, Sheridan, and Weston—where conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms.

These storms could bring 60 mph wind gusts and hail up to one inch in diameter, with the potential for localized power outages and dangerous driving conditions.

The watch went into effect at 12:55 p.m. MDT on Saturday and will continue through the evening. Areas such as Gillette, Buffalo, and surrounding communities should prepare for sudden downpours, frequent lightning, and possibly hazardous travel conditions.

Roads along I-90 and U.S. Route 14 could be affected, making travel dangerous due to poor visibility and strong winds.

What to Do in Case of Severe Weather

Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay indoors, especially if the sky darkens, as conditions can change rapidly. Avoid parking under trees or near power lines, as strong winds could cause branches or power lines to fall. If you’re on the road, it’s important to pull over and wait for the storm to pass to avoid driving in dangerous conditions.

The First Severe Weather of the Month

This round of storms comes amid unusually warm July weather in Wyoming. Today marks the first significant severe weather event for the region this month, so it’s crucial to stay informed and monitor local alerts.

The severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect until 9 p.m. MDT, and additional warnings could be issued if the storms intensify.
